I am often asked, as no doubt are many business owners, “Just how did it all start?”. Well in my case it started as a hobby in the early 80’s when my parents bought me my first computer, namely a BBC Micro. From that moment on I was hooked. Like most young boys, after the initial few months of playing with this “toy”, I then wanted to take it apart to see how it worked. It was a small step from this to trying to write my own software. In fact, my first attempt was to create a program that would keep track of my mum’s catalogue account, and I must get round to finishing it one day!
The expansion of my computer knowledge was rapid, from purchasing and learning all about IBM PC’s and struggling to understand the intricacies of how to write DOS batch files, to being one of the few to initially adopt Microsoft Windows . I also managed to squeeze in five years of managing an IBM AS400 at my first place of work in Eagglescliffe.
Computers then progressed and evolved with phenomenal speed and I found myself gasping for breath as I raced and pushed myself to keep up with all the latest developments and technologies. I found I was working my 9 – 5 job and then coming home and starting all over again, working until the early hours of the morning to feed my constant thirst and passion for everything computer related.
I had always been on hand to help my friends and family with their personal computers, however in 2004 this changed when a good friend of mine contacted me and asked for my help as he was setting up a small business from home and needed some advice. One meeting, a lot of questions and answers, and two weeks later I had installed a laptop, a computer, a shared printer and a wireless network in his home. The seeds of business had been sowed.
I continued with my job initially, but word soon got round and I got more and more business requests from people wanting help in setting up their small home-offices. Finally, in late 2004 I felt I needed to have a chat with my boss, who had also setup his own company, and told him of my ideas to set up mine. His support and knowledge helped me during this time and Resilient Business Systems was officially born on the 1st April 2005.
I helped my husband set up our business as, having used computers at work for a number of years, I too understood the need for friendly help and support for a wide variety of IT issues faced by users on a daily basis, and how new companies and small businesses do not always have the luxury of being able to afford their own IT consultant.
More importantly being the mother of a teenage child, I understand that internet content, chat rooms and on-line gaming are a minefield for parents and felt that we could also provide a service to help set-up safe, secure and, when required, restricted access on home computers.
I am predominantly the Financial Director and Administrator for Resilient Business Systems however I am also in charge of marketing, our internal intranet site and the Christmas Party!
I also assist with front-line support, either helping to resolve problems where possible or, alternatively, determining which IT consultant would be most suitable for the customer's needs.
I am currently undertaking a Sage Accountancy Course and am learning to drive.
